Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)
Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) due to high pH has been observed and studied in pipelines for years.
SCC is a phenomenon that is the combination of three things, High pH, repeated stress from loading and unloading, i.e. pressure cycling and temperatures greater than 40 degrees Celsius (105F). The damage caused by SCC is greater than the combination of the individual stressors. Coatings that have failed to cure SCC are Coat Tar Enamel, Asphaltic coatings, or Polyethylene Tape.
  • The pipeline industry has intensively studied failure since 1965 and has developed protocol for dealing with and preventing corrosion failure.
  • The pipeline industry is now going to 100% Polyurethane solids coatings for their bonding ability and corrosion resistance.
  • The "Big Dig" in Boston specified that 100% solids polyurethane is sprayed on all structural members used in the harbor tunnel.
  • 100% solids Polyurethane has been around since 1937 and bonds tenaciously to steel.
  • 250-400% elongation means it will not crack and will flex with the tank.
  • Impervious to freeze-thaw cycles.
  • No VOCs
  • Does not leave holidays or voids
  • Potable water formulation available.
  • Will likely double the life of your tank. (at least)
  • Best known for its use in truck bed liners (high pressure)
  • No downtime, return to work the same day.
